Tribal Sovereignty Units: US-Industrialization and US as World Power: Allotment
High School Level: US-Industrialization and US as World Power: Allotment
Level 1 Activity
Approximate Teaching Time: 55 minutes This
activity explores the Allotment Act and its impact on tribal people.
The Allotment Act granted individual ownership of tribal lands to tribal
people and declared all remaining tribal land "surplus," and therefore
open to non-Indian settlement. This Act not only greatly diminished
tribal lands, it fractured tribal strength and community as a result.
